Writing Detail paragraphs
(Paragraphs 3 & 4)
More extensive information about the data in the graph is included in graphs 3 and 4. In paragraph 3, you should support your first primary idea with proof.
The data in this case will be the number of students in each of the time periods. It could be percentages, age, monetary worth, or some other unit of measurement in other visuals.
When it comes to comparisons, don’t forget to use them.
Here’s a recap of our first primary feature:
- The main feature 1: The overall number of students enrolled in full-time study is increasing.
Here’s a sample of what you might write:
3rd paragraph
Between the academic years 1970/1 and 1990/1, the number of males studying full-time increased steadily, starting at 100,000 in 1970/1 and reaching nearly 300,000 in 1990/1. Women’s numbers had climbed to around 300,000 by 1990/1, with an upward trend. However, in 1970/1, the number of women enrolled in full-time education was nearly half that of men, indicating that women enrolled in full-time education at a higher rate than men between 1970/1 and 1980/1.
You repeat the process for your second primary feature in the fourth and final paragraph. Consider the following scenario:
- Main feature 2: the number of women studying part-time is continuously increasing, whilst the number of men studying part-time is fluctuating.
4th paragraph
Part-time schooling follows a different pattern. The graph shows a steady rise in part-time study among women, from 750,000 in 1970/1 to 1,000,000 in 1990/1. The figure for men, on the other hand, fluctuated. They had decreased from 1,000,000 in 1970/1 to approximately 200,000 by 1980/1, but had rebounded slightly by 1990/1. The pattern between men and women in part-time study reversed over time, with male students outnumbering female students in 1970/1 and female students taking the lead in 1990/1.
Language elements to consider:
Consider, writing in compound and complex sentences to show the related and consequent happenings. Also, make sure you use the time expressions. For example:
- Between the academic years 1970/1 and 1990/1,
- From 1971 to 1990
- In 1990
- During 1990
