Developing an overview paragraph

Writing an Overview

(Paragraph 2)

The primary aspects shown in the graph should be reported in the second paragraph, with just generic information provided. The essay’s detail comes later. You should also make any obvious parallels you notice.

This is where you discuss the broad trends. Here are the ones we chose before.

  • Main feature 1: the cumulative number of students in full-time education increases.
  • Main feature 2: the number of women studying part-time is continuously increasing, whilst the number of men studying part-time is fluctuating.

Now combine these thoughts into two or three phrases totaling about 40 words. Simply state the facts, using synonyms whenever possible. There is no need for a large vocabulary or complex grammar structures; all that is needed are the right words and the correct verb.

2nd paragraph:

Over this period, the number of students enrolled in full-time school grew. In terms of part-time education, the number of women opting to study part-time has steadily increased, whilst the number of men preferring to study part-time has fluctuated.

Remember, you don’t follow the typical paragraph structure here.

You should summarize the chart, map, process, graph or table given to you. When summarizing, you ought to pick information about the highest, and lowest and one that indicates a major fluctuation.
